The Bellingcat Method

In 2015, I came across the remarkable story of Bellingcat. A growing group of volunteers who spend all of their free time on the internet in searching for evidence in cases like the downing of MH17 or war crimes in Syria. At that time I contacted the founder of Bellingcat: Eliot Higgins. When the known documentary director (and friend) Hans Pool later asked me to research this together, a film started to emerge. With the support of VPRO and Submarine, this feature length documentary premiered at IDFA in 2018. The film explores the promise of open source investigation. For the first time and exclusively, we were allowed in Bellingcat’s worldwide online society. I did research, interview and impact production for the film.
